‘Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters’ Coming from Oni Press
Oni Press announced plans to publish Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters, the first book of a new middle grade fantasy graphic novel series by Eisner award-winning comics artist Chris Samnee, co-written with his wife Laura Samnee, with color by Matthew Wilson. The book will be published in October 2020.
Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters is a story about the appearance of monsters and the disappearance of Jonna, a young girl. Rainbow, Jonna’s sister, has been looking for her and their father, since both of them disappeared when the monsters arrived and the world began to dry up. Rainbow finally finds Jonna, alone in the wild. She’s filthy but incredibly strong, so strong she can flatten a monster with one punch. Somehow she’s managed to survive in the wilderness on her own without the help of anyone.
But now the two sisters—Rainbow and Jonna—are reunited to face a world with even more dangers than the monsters. Now they can explore the terrible new world they will face together and find out more about this terrifying new place.
Chris Samnee compared Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters to the comics of Jeff Smith (Bone), Mike Maihack (Cleopatra in Space), and Judd Winnick (Hilo). “I’ve always had the urge to do something creator-owned, but seeing how much my kids were enjoying these comics made we want to make something I could share with them.”
Oni Press publisher James Lucas Jones noted that this is the first effort by the Samnees to collaborate on a graphic novel series for young readers. “Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters is a unique opportunity for comic shops and fans to embark on a fantastic journey with the Samnees telling a story in a way they never have before."
