DC Adds Stories, New Creators to Represent! Digital Comics Series
DC announced plans to add more stories, writers and artists to Represent!, a new series of digital comics focused on personal stories by creators of color and other underrepresented comics creators.
The series kicked off in September 2020 with “It’s a Bird,” written by Christian Cooper with art by Alitha E. Martinez and Mark Morales. Cooper is the Black Central Park birdwatcher whose encounter with a white dog owner became a viral event when she falsely accused him of threatening her. His story is inspired by that encounter.
Forthcoming stories include 'Heritage', written by Jesse Holland with art by Doug Braithwaite, which is based on Holland’s childhood growing up on his family’s farm in Mississippi, which has been in his family since his forebears were freed from slavery. Next will be “Food For Thought”, written by Regine Sawyer with art by Eric Battle, the story of a girl whose passion for cooking troubles her father, who is concerned that his talented only daughter is settling for working in a kitchen. And in Book Four will be “Believe You,” written by Nadira Jamerson with art by Brittney Williams, the story of a young mother who is struggling with her health, and with doctors who don’t think there’s anything wrong with her.
DC editor-in-chief Marie Javins said, “Represent! is the kind of innovative and personal storytelling I’ve always believed in. Throughout history, stories have been catalysts to expand hearts, minds and culture; having the chance to do so with this group of talented writers and artists has been invigorating and has been embraced throughout DC.”
