Wells Named Chief Content Officer at Tapas Media
Michele Wells, former interim editor-in-chief and v-p of content strategy at DC, has been named to the newly created position of chief content officer at Tapas Media, a mobile comics platform. Wells will join the company March 1. In her new Job, Wells will oversee the development of all new and original materials for webcomics and novels at Tapas Media.
Tapas specializes in creating “snackable” vertical scroll online comics available through its mobile app. The platform offers hundreds of titles in the genres of fantasy and romance and attracts millions of readers (generally women 18-24) each month. The platform is focused on serialized digital comics but is expanding its reach into novels and print format via partnerships with Scholastic and other publishers.
Wells was most recently interim editor-in-chief at DC and left the company after its recent reorganization. She was originally recruited to be v-p of content strategy at the comics publishing house, and was responsible for the launch of DC’s middle grade and young adult graphic novel imprints. Before joining DC, she was executive editor at Disney Publishing Worldwide.
Wells said of her new position: ”it’s our responsibility to create content that reflects the authentic voices and experiences of the world around us, so we'll be producing original IP with established creators while also finding and supporting up-and-coming talent and their unique perspectives. We’ll be exploring partnership opportunities with traditional publishers, as well as working to adapt our content for film and TV.”
Tapas Media CEO Chang Kim said: “Michele is joining our team at an incredibly exciting moment of our company. We’ve seen an unprecedented amount of growth in the past year, and as we start to envision the next stages of our company’s evolution, we couldn’t have asked for a better partner.”
