Matt Kindt’s NFT Comics Strip Bought at Auction
Cartoonist Matt Kindt’s MIND MGMT: The Artifact, a comics strip NFT (non-fungible token), has been purchased at auction by an anonymous collector and posted on reddit.
The comics strip was purchased for 2.68 Etherium (Etherium is one of several cryptocurrencies used to buy and sell NFTs on the Open Sea digital market). The sale is estimated to be worth about $5,660.
Placed on auction by Kindt in late March, MIND MGMT: The Artifact is a unique native digital comics strip, or NFT, based on his eponymous 2013 graphic novel series. It was created in the form of an NFT and put on sale at auction on Open Sea, a marketplace for unique digital art. In acknowledgement of the enormous energy use required to create and maintain blockchain-based currencies, Kindt announced that all proceeds of the sale of the NFT strip would go to an environmental charity.
The buyer of MIND MGMT: The Artifact wishes to remain anonymous (“I don’t want to deal with the whole hatred on the internet thing”) and has posted the comic on reddit. The buyer has notified a number of media outlets to feel free to post the link to the strip. The copyright to the strip continues to be owned by Kindt who has said that whoever buys the NFT is free to disclose the story.
The anonymous buyer said in an email, “I’m trying to make sure it’s out there and not being used to promote a single thing.”
