Mouly, Phillips Among Six Inductees to 2021 Eisner Hall of Fame
Comic-Con International announced the names of six new inductees into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame, among them, RAW Books and Toon Books founder Françoise Mouly (who is pictured), and golden age cartoonist Lily Renée Phillips.
CCI also announced 16 nominees from whom voters will select four that will also be inducted.
Mouly, who is also the art director of the New Yorker magazine, is the cofounder of influential 1980s indie comix house RAW Books (along with her husband cartoonist Art Speigelman), and founder in 2008 of Toon Books, a pioneering comics publishing house specializing in graphic novels for early and young readers. Phillips, who will celebrate her 100th birthday May 2, began her career in the 1940s Golden Age of Comics and worked on a variety of comics genres as an illustrator and inker. She is among the first small group of women to work in the early comic book industry in New York City.
Also inducted alongside Mouly and Phillips, are the late Argentinean Alberto Breccia, longtime Archie cartoonist Stan Goldberg, 19th century editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast, and 18th century Swiss cartoonist Rodolphe Töpffer.
Among the 16 nominees from whom four will be selected by voters for the Hall are Kevin Eastman, Neil Gaiman, Moto Hagio, Don Heck, Hank Ketcham, and Scott McCloud. A complete list of the nominees Is available on the Comic-Con International website.
The Eisner Hall of Fame induction and presentation of trophies will be presented in a virtual awards ceremony to be held during Comic-Con@Home, which will be held July 23-25, 2021.
