German Philosopher Rejects Rich UAE Award

German philosopher Jürgen Habermas has rejected the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for "Cultural Personality of the Year," which would have awarded him $272,249. Habermas, considered Germany's most important living philosopher, cited human rights issues in the United Arab Emirates. The award is one of a series of rich awards given in conjunction with the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) and aims to honor those who engage in and with Arabic culture. Habermas has been widely translated in Arabic and Germany is serving as this year's guest of honor at the ADIBF.
