Macmillan Donates $84,000 to Literacy Nonprofit Start Lighthouse
Macmillan Publishers has announced a donation of $84,000 to Start Lighthouse, a Bronx-based nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering childhood literacy. The donation, the largest ever received by Start Lighthouse, is part of Macmillan’s initiative to donate $1,000,000 over the next year to organizations that champion books, authors, and literacy, with a special focus on underserved communities.
Start Lighthouse launched in March 2020. Since then, it has delivered over 300 hours of programming to schools and families, distributed 7,634 brand-new multicultural and culturally responsive books, and kickstarted 3,017 home libraries in the South Bronx. The donation from Macmillan will allow Start Lighthouse to expand its programming for grades PreK-8 and ensure 12,000 new books will be distributed to 4,000 Bronx public school students.
The donation marks the first of a two-year partnership between Macmillan and Start Lighthouse.
