Maverick to Publish 'Paper Planes' YA Graphic Novel
Maverick, the YA imprint of graphic novel publisher Mad Cave Studios, announced plans to publish Paper Planes by writer Jennie Wood and artist Dozer Draws, an original graphic novel about two teenagers reckoning with a childhood tragedy. The book will be released in May 2023.
Created by two nonbinary artists, Paper Planes, is the story of two inseparable high school friends sent to a summer camp for troubled kids in the aftermath of a tragic event that threatens their friendship. The book focuses on themes of identity and friendship and draws on the personal experiences of the creators to present the life and experiences of a nonbinary character.
Wood said that “this book allowed me to write my first nonbinary character while I was coming out as nonbinary.” Dozer Draws added, “As a nonbinary creator, Paper Planes is what I would have loved to read during my teen years. I am more than happy that I could help in bringing this emotional and very personal story to life.”
