United States Artists Org Announces 2023 Fellows
The United States Artists, a nonprofit arts organization in Chicago announced today the names of the 45 recipients of its 2023 USA Fellowships. Four authors are among this year’s recipients from 19 states, Guam, and Puerto Rico: Ernestine Shaankaláxt’ Hayes, a memoirist, essayist, and poet; Ilya Kaminsky, a poet and translator; Alex Marzano-Lesnevich, a memoirist; and Ofelia Zepeda, a poet and linguist. Each 2023 USA Fellowship recipient receives a $50,000 unrestricted cash award.
Launched in 2006 to fund the endeavors of creatives at all stages in their careers working in 10 categories—architecture and design, craft, dance, film, media, music, theater and performance, traditional arts, visual art, and writing—the organization has in the past seven years given away more than $38 million total to 800 artists across the country. Past recipients of United States Artists fellowships who are writers include Alexander Chee, Teju Cole, Kiese Laymon, Fred Moten, Claudia Rankine, Sharon Olds, Ocean Vuong, and others.
