U.K. Comics Festivals Launch Sophie Castille Comics Translation Awards
In collaboration with VIP Brands Ltd, U.K. comics festivals Comica and the Lakes International Comic Art Festival announced the launch of the Sophie Castille Awards for Comics in Translation, to honor the memory of Castille, who died unexpectedly in 2022. The inaugural award will be presented at the Lakes International Festival in Bowness-on-Windermere in October 2023.
The Sophie Castille Awards for Comics in Translation are for the best translation of graphic novels into a variety of languages around the world. This inaugural award will be for the best translation of a non-English graphic novel into English.
The awards have been created to honor the memory of the late Sophie Castille, international rights director and v-p of licensing for Mediatoon, and the cofounder and director of Europe Comics. Castille is credited with being a key figure in the growth of the popularity and translation of comics and graphic novels around the world.
Winners of the inaugural awards will be chosen by three judges: Karen Green, Curator for Comics and Cartoons, Columbia University's Rare Book & Manuscript Library; Walking Dead artist, Charlie Adlard, and Peter Kessler MBE, chair of The Lakes International Comic Art Festival. Information on submissions can be found on the Sophie Castille Awards page.
