MPIBA Creates Scholarship Honoring Joyce Meskis

The Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association, along with the family of legendary Denver bookseller Joyce Meskis have created the Joyce Meskis Excellence in Bookselling Scholarship program. The scholarship, which is open to booksellers in the MPIBA region, will enable its recipients to attend MPIBA’s FallCon regional trade show in Denver or SpringCon, which rotates between cities in the more southern parts of MPIBA’s territory. Applications for this fall’s two scholarships open on August 1, with an August 25 deadline.

Meskis, the owner of the Tattered Cover Bookstore from 1974-2017, died in December. She also helped establish MPIBA in the late ‘70s and served as the first president of its board of directors. A former president of the American Booksellers Association, Meskis was renowned for her passionate advocacy of free speech and the First Amendment.
