Rita Dove to Receive NBF Lifetime Achievement Award

Rita Dove is this year's recipient of the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

Dove’s body of work includes 11 books of poetry, a collection of her Poet Laureate lectures, a short story collection, and a play. She is the qinner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Thomas and Beulah, her third collection of poetry. From 1993 to 1995, Dove served as the first Black Poet Laureate of the United States, and she is the only poet to date to have received both the National Humanities Medal and the National Medal of Arts. 

Poet Jericho Brown will present the 2023 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters to Dove at the 74th annual National Book Awards on November 15.
