Author Scott Blackwood Dies at 58
Scott Blackwood, author of the 2016 novel See How Small, among several other books, died on October 4 in Roanoke, Va., of complications from ALS. He was 58.
Over the course of his career published two novels, a short story collection, and two works of narrative nonfiction. His final novel See How Small was awarded the PEN USA Award for Fiction, and his 2009 novel We Agreed to Meet Just Here received a Whiting Award for Fiction and the AWP Prize for the Novel. His two-volume book of narrative nonfiction, The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records, was published by Jack White's Third Man Books and earned Blackwood a nomination for a 2015 Grammy Award.
Born in 1965 in El Dorado, Arkansas, Blackwood received a BA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MFA in Creative Writing at Texas State University. He most recently served as a Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing at Hollins University in Roanoke, Va.
Blackwood is survived by his wife and two children, as well as his parents, two brothers, and three step-siblings. The family asks that donations in Blackwood's honor be made to PEN America or I AM ALS.
