MCD to Publish Fourth Book in Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach Series
Farrar, Straus and Giroux imprint MCD will publish a surprise fourth book in Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach series. Absolution, which serves as a prequel to the original trilogy, will be published on October 22, roughly 10 years after the publication of the first novel in the series, Annihilation, the first novel in the series. The deal was handled by Joe Veltre at The Gersh Agency and Alex Kohner at Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner, Endlich, Goodell & Gellman.
On July 30, Picador, a division of FSG, will also publish tenth anniversary editions of the Southern Reach trilogy (Annihilation, Authority, and Acceptance), featuring introductions by Karen Joy Fowler, N. K. Jemisin, and Helen Macdonald, respectively. All four of the new cover designs are illustrated by Pablo Delcan and art directed by Alex Merto.
The Southern Reach Trilogy has sold over a million copies and has been translated into more than thirty-seven languages. In 2014, MCD released the three books individually over an eight-month period. Annihilation won the Nebula Award and the Shirley Jackson Award, and in 2018, the novel was adapted into a film.
