WWB Receives Grant from Hawthornden Foundation
Words Without Borders (WWB) has been awarded a $75,000 operating grant from Hawthornden Foundation.
The grant will strengthen WWB’s operations ahead of a planned expansion of its work and provide financial stability through an executive leadership change in 2024, the organization said. It is the single largest investment in the organization’s general operations over its 21-year history.
“Access to the world’s literary voices has never been more urgent,” said WWB executive director and publisher Karen M. Phillips in a statement. “As Words Without Borders works to scale up our international audience and impact, this substantial commitment from Hawthornden Foundation is instrumental.”
WWB is a digital platform for contemporary literature in English translation that offers readers of English free access to a variety of writing translated from 140 languages and 143 countries. Its education program, WWB Campus, provides curricular resources and training for educators to bring international literature into classrooms.
