NYPL Celebrates 100 Years of James Baldwin
In celebration of James Baldwin's 100th birthday, the New York Public Library has launched a two-part initiative to honor the writer, activist, public intellectual, and frequent library patron.
First, the NYPL will stage the first major exhibitions of its James Baldwin papers at the two NYPL locations that inspired Baldwin most in his lifetime: the Stephen A Schwarzman Building in midtown Manhattan and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. Collection highlights include manuscript drafts of Giovanni's Room and The Fire Next Time and correspondence with Maya Angelou and Lorraine Hansberry.
In addition, 30 NYPL branches across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island will participate in one of the biggest adult book giveaways in the library's history, with more than 30 library branches giving away 4,000 select Baldwin titles to patrons, as well as offering a lineup of arts and writing workshops and walking tours throughout the summer and fall.
