Spread the Word Revives London Writers Awards for 2025-2027
Spread the Word, a literature development agency in the U.K. founded in 1995 by Booker Prize winning novelist Bernardine Evaristo and Ruth Borthwick, is relaunching its London Writers Awards program for 2025-2027. The program aims to increase representation in publishing by supporting writers from underrepresented communities. Since its 2018 launch, the Awards have helped 120 writers, of which 50 have secured agents, leading to over 35 book deals.
"The progress made in 2020 to support writers from diverse backgrounds has stalled," Ruth Harrison, Director of Spread the Word, said. "We're delighted to bring the program back for another three years."
The annual program will support 24 writers through masterclasses, industry days, and critical feedback groups. Applications open on September 25, 2024, with judges including authors Nilesha Chauvet, Oisín McKenna, Jyoti Patel, and Tọlá Okogwu.
