'News from Native California' Invites Subscribers
News from Native California, a quarterly print magazine published by Bay Area indie press Heyday, intends to boost readership in recognition of California Indian Day, September 27. From September 26–30, readers can order a one-year subscription to the news, arts, and culture magazine for $12. Annual subscriptions to NNC, which also is available on newsstands, ordinarily cost $21.
Heyday began publishing News from Native California in 1987, to document and amplify the histories, languages, and social justice movements specific to Indigenous people of the region. In 2012, Heyday developed the Berkeley Roundhouse program to center writing by, for, and about California’s Native peoples, and included NNC in this expansion. Many of the magazine's contributors have published books with Heyday and the Roundhouse, including Gordon Lee Johnson (Bird Songs Don’t Lie), Deborah Miranda (Bad Indians), Ursula Pike (An Indian Among Los Indígenas), and Greg Sarris (The Forgetters).
NNC editor Terria Smith said the magazine “is dedicated to keeping Native stories in the headlines year-round. Our California Indian Day offer is our way of making the magazine more accessible to everyone, including students, so they can engage with stories that concern this vibrant community.”
