Arundhati Roy Shares 2024 English PEN Pinter Prize with Alaa Abd el-Fattah

Arundhati Roy, winner of the 2024 English PEN Pinter Prize, will share her award with Alaa Abd el-Fattah, whom she has selected as this year's Writer of Courage.

Alaa Abd el-Fattah is a British-Egyptian writer and activist who is one of the most prominent political prisoners in Egypt. He remains imprisoned and arbitrarily detained despite having completed a mandated five-year sentence last month.

Each year, the winner of Pinter Prize selects a Writer of Courage—described by English PEN as "someone who has been persecuted for speaking out about their beliefs"—with whom to split the award, with the Pinter winner and Writer of Courage each receiving half of the prize money.

Roy announced that her share of the prize money will be donated to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund.
