CALIBA Releases List of Golden Poppy Finalists
The California Independent Booksellers Alliance today announced the finalists for its 2024 Golden Poppy Book Awards. The awards honor California authors and illustrators across 14 categories this year, including two juried prizes: the Martin Cruz Smith Award for Emerging Diverse Voices and the Mirrors and Windows Award for Excellence in Children’s Literature.
Hannah Walcher, CALIBA’s executive director, noted “a significant increase in submissions in 2024.” CALIBA’s Golden Poppy committees, comprised of member booksellers from throughout the Golden State, read more than 350 entries this year.
To be eligible for a Golden Poppy, an author or illustrator must be living in California while creating their book, but they do not need to be a resident at the time of the book’s publication. Nonfiction about the state of California is eligible for consideration, even if written by non-residents.
Voting on the shortlists will open to CALIBA members from January 5–15, and a virtual awards ceremony will be held in early February.
