Clarivate Extends Perpetual Purchase Program Through June 2026
Clarivate, the information services provider that owns such library and education tools as ProQuest, Ex Libris, and the Web of Science, has backed down somewhat on its announcement from last month that it would “phase out one-time perpetual purchases of digital collections, print, and digital books for libraries” in 2025, requiring libraries to lease content rather than make permanent acquisitions. In a letter addressed “to the library community” released yesterday, Clarivate acknowledged that “the absence of community consultation created frustration, during already challenging times for libraries and higher education.” The letter noted that, following “conversations with librarians, customer advisory boards, user groups, and partners,” the company “realized that the original communicated dates for the last orders would pose a considerable challenge, so we are extending your ability to make perpetual purchases of print books and ebooks on all platforms through June 30, 2026.”
