PEN America Launches its First Kickstarter Campaign
In support of international literature and its ability to bridge the cultural divide, PEN America launched its first-ever Kickstarter campaign in support of a new series, Passages.
Sharing news of the Kickstarter campaign, PEN said that only 3% of books published in the U.S. are works in translation, and that only nine languages account for 90% of the world’s translations, with the majority being translated from English.
With Passages, which covers writing trends in some of the world’s least-translated territories, PEN hopes to bring compelling new projects to English-reading audiences and publishers. The first edition of Passages is titled Passages: Africa, co-edited by Billy Kahora. It includes 16 works from across the continent, translated from Swahili, French, and Portuguese, with a focus on LGBT literature.
