Medium Launches Matter Studios
Matter, the online magazine hosted on the publishing platform Medium, is now an independent media company called Matter Studios, according to Medium’s editor in chief Mark Lotto. The company will seek forward-thinking voices and give them financial and creative support to develop different media products under their own brand. Matter will also provide distribution.
“Matter is going to be for digital storytellers what HBO and Amazon Studios are for TV makers, or what the best incubators are for startups,” Lotto said in his online post.
Evan Williams, the co-founder of Twitter who also founded Medium, will serve as chairman and owner of Matter Studios, while journalist Hillary Frey and Lotto will serve as chief creative officers. Advisers include former president of MTV Stephen Friedman, comedian Akilah Hughes, New York Times foreign correspondent Lydia Polgreen, and more.
