The Other NBA Charity Basketball Game, Is Back!
The “Other NBA”, a charity basketball game between a team of award-winning writers and a team of powerhouse publishers, will take place June 15 at 6:30pm St. Francis College in Brooklyn.
Inspired by the confusion between the Twitter hashtags of #NBAwards and the #NBA, The Other NBA returns for its second benefit game. The writers won last year 55-40 and the game raised $6,000 for literacy. Sponsored by literary apparel producer Out of Print and Litsy, the book recommendation site, The Other NBA raises funds to support BookUp, a reading program for underserved youth, including a recently launched new program dedicated to LGBTQ readers.
It’s a fundraising event to support literacy, but its also a fast-paced and exciting basketball game featuring a host of prominent writers, among them poet Reginald Dwayne Betts, novelist Mitchell S. Jackson, novelist Téa Obreht, and poet Natalie Diaz. On the court for the publishers are One World editor Chris Jackson, the AAP’s Tina Jordan, Katie Freeman from Riverhead Books, and the Literary Hub’s Johnny Diamond.
Writer, editor and Journalist Dan Sheehan will coach the writers team, and Lisa Lucas, newly appointed director of the National Book Foundation, will coach the publishers.
The game starts at 6:30 pm on June 15 at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY.
Tickets are just $20 and proceeds support BookUp.
