Top-Selling Noisemakers
Daisy Maryles, with Lynn Garrett -- 9/15/97
Dell is crowing about two of its mass market bestsellers. One is Nicholas Evans's The Horse Whisperer, which has been climbing the bestseller charts again after a hiatus of several months. First published about two years ago by Delacorte Press, the hardcover edition sold so well that there are nearly one million copies in print. Dell's paper edition has more than 2.5 million copies in print. The publisher attributes its recent jump in paperback sales to the tremendous amount of publicity the upcoming movie has been receiving. The major entertainment presses have not let a week go by without some story about the film, which stars Robert Redford and Kristin Scott Thomas. And happily for publisher and author, all stories have mentioned the book. The movie is scheduled for release by Disney for Christmas 1997.Dell's massive multimedia and reading campaign for one of its star authors, Danielle Steel, is paying off. Steel's most recent mass market title, Silent Honor, g s on the list after a only a partial week on sale; the first printing was two million copies. TV ad spots are running during Entertainment Tonight, Today and on the Lifetime Television Network.
