Trollope Moves from RH to Viking
Judy Quinn -- 9/22/97
In a February 3, 1997 interview with PW, author Joanna Trollope hinted that A Spanish Lover, published this past winter, might be her last hardcover with Random House. "I don't want to make too much of this but I'm considering A Spanish Lover a make or break book," she said.
Apparently it didn't make it. Despite a continual rise in sales for each of the four Trollope novels RH published, agent Joy Harris represented the author in a major six-figure deal for four new novels and two backlist titles in a first-ever joint buy by Penguin Putnam imprints Viking and Berkley. Berkley is already Trollope's paperback publisher -- it published The Choir and The Rector's Wife and will bring out A Spanish Lover in March 1998. Viking will pub its the first Trollope hardcover, The Best of Friends, a title originally under commitment to RH, in May 1998.

Viking executive editor Pamela Dorman and Berkley editor-in-chief Leslie Gelbman made the investment -- higher than what RH was willing to pay, sources say -- to build Trollope along the lines of another Viking hardcover author, Jan Karon, who, like Trollope now, started out as an author in the 20,000-copy sales range but now has over one million copies in print of four Penguin paperback and Viking hardcovers.
