Tuscany to Broadway
Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 10/27/97
One of the year's top sleepers is coming all the way from Italy-- or San Francisco, depending on one's perspective. When Underthe Tuscan Sun was published by Chronicle Books in October 1996,it spent almost a year on the San Francisco Chronicle bestsellerlist, based largely on word of mouth and local publicity. Lastmonth Broadway Books published the book in trade paper and begana campaign to broaden author Frances Mayes' audience. Plannedstops along her forthcoming tour include the Southern Festival ofBooks in Nashville and the Northwest Bookfest in Seattle, plusbookstore appearances in New England and D.C. In addition, thepublisher is building on the hardcover's popularity by resaturating the Bay Area with events and media coverage --efforts, it appears, that are paying off nicely. Mayes' work, which is now in its seventh printing (in-print total, 215,000),is enjoying its fifth week on PW's list, in addition to appearances on charts ranging from the New York Times to Ingramto the Boston Globe. In one of the most unexpected publicityboosts, actress Cybill Shepherd announced that she had beenreading the book -- on last month's edition of Oprah Winfrey'sBook Club show.
