Women Power Daisy Maryles, with Diane Roback -- 1/26/98 Six new books appeared on PW's mass market list this week -- a fairly hefty number -- and five are by female authors. Actually, one, Acts of Love, is by Judith Michael, a pseudonym for a husband-and-wife team. It's book number nine for the duo; copies in print total 825,000 after two trips to press. Jude Deveraux's latest, An Angel for Emily, lands on the highest rung of all the newcomers, #5. One of romance's leading ladies, Deveraux has seen 22 of her 28 Pocket Book novels reach the national charts. There are one million copies in print of her latest. Barbara Delinsky has 65 books to her credit, and her latest contemporary fiction, A Woman's Place, has gone back to press for an extra 100,000 copies after HarperPaperbacks launched it with a 550,000-copy first printing. Popular romance author Susan Elizabeth Phillips lands with Dream a Little Dream, which has gone back to press for Avon three times, bringing the in-print total to 510,000. Phillips, whose books are published in 14 languages, contends that "the fundamental fantasy of the romance novel isn't a sexual one. These are novels of female empowerment -- a story in which a woman emerges victorious from every obstacle that life throws her way."
Writing in another genre is Anne McCaffrey, who has a new hardcover as well as a new paperback bestseller this week -- a triumphant way of celebrating the 30th anniversary of her Dragonriders of Pern series. The latest installment, The Masterharper of Pern, lands on the hardcover chart with 100,000 copies in print. In mass market, it's another Pern adventure making the charts: Dragonseye, with 200,000 copies in print. Check out the Del Rey area of the RH website (www.randomhouse.com) for McCaffrey archives, interviews, a Pern trivia contest plus rules for submitting manuscripts for the Anne McCaffrey Award -- to be judged by the author herself.
