Investment Group Buys Nebraska Book Co.
Jim Milliot -- 2/23/98
Haas Wheat &Partners, a Dallas-based investment firm, has acquired Nebraska Book Company from another investment company, Olympus Partners, for $245 million. Headquartered in Lincoln, Nebr., Nebraska Book is a major supplier of used textbooks to approximately 2000 college campuses, selling more than seven million books annually. In addition, Nebraska owns 54 college bookstores that help supply the company with used texts.
No major changes are expected in Nebraska Book's operations as a result of the sale. The company's senior management, led by president and CEO Mark Oppegard, will continue to run the wholesaler and will also retain an equity position in Nebraska Book.

Oppegard said the investment by Haas Wheat "provides us with the additional capital we will need to execute an aggressive plan for future growth." In the past two years, Nebraska Book has acquired or opened 17 new college bookstores, added a provider of distant education materials and acquired Collegiate Stores Corp., a centralized buying service for Nebraska Book's member stores.
