Hot Deals: Gerry Howard's Love is 'Unrequited'
Judy Quinn -- 7/6/98
Former Norton editor and now new Anchor chief Gerry Howard has bought his first novel in his new post. In a $275,000 U.S. rights deal, Howard acquired The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, a sweeping novel by Canadian writer Wayne Johnston that fictionalizes the saga of J y Smallwood, the first prime minister of Newfoundland. This is the first U.S. publishing deal for Johnston, who was represented by Canadian agent Anne McDermid. As part of this deal, Howard acquires paperback rights to Johnston's earlier, humorous Divine Ryans, a Roddy Doyle-esque tale also set in Newfoundland that is currently being filmed by the Love and Death on Long Island producers from a script by Johnston. Howard, who has also brought Norton authors James Welch and Ana Castillo over to Anchor, plans a spring 1999 publication for Unrequited.
