U.K.'s Sutton Opens N.Y. Office
Diane Patrick -- 8/10/98
Sutton Publishing, which publishes history, military, transportation and biography titles in the U.K., has opened a New York City office. Ellen Simon, North American sales and promotion manager, will head the North American operations under the direction of Nick Carter, sales and marketing director. Simon spent 14 years at W.W. Norton in sales and marketing, and before that worked at Little, Brown and Doubleday.
Currently, Sutton titles are distributed by International Publishers Marketing, and the company plans to sign a contract for Canadian distribution. Sutton also plans to hire a history editor for the U.S. office and to publish American history titles alongside its international list. The company also expects to expand its book club representation, which already includes the Military Book Club and History Book Club.

This fall, Sutton -- which publishes 280 titles a year in the U.K., of which about 200 are brought to the U.S. -- plans to launch Pocket Histories, which it hopes will match the success of its $9.95 Pocket Biographies series. Written by well-known authors and edited by Lord Asa Briggs, forthcoming titles in the series include Ancient Egypt, The Crusades and The Russian Revolution.

The company's address is 37 E. 7th St., New York, N.Y. 10003; (212) 375-1138, fax (212) 375-1139, e-mail suttonus@interport.com.
