Question: What do the following authors have in common -- Ernest Hemingway, Dr. Seuss, John Steinbeck, William Styron, Irving Wallace and Jimmy Buffett? Answer: they have all reached the #1 spot on both the fiction and nonfiction bestseller lists of the New York Times. The most recent addition to this notable list, of course, is musician Jimmy Buffett, whose novel Where Is J Merchant? achieved the coveted Times position on September 20, 1992. Buffett's memoir, A Pirate Looks at Fifty, which today marks its 12th week on PW's nonfiction list, topped the Times list on June 28. Buffett's philosophy on life and how to live it was published by Random House on June 4 with a first printing of 265,000; 13 trips back to press have upped that figure to 590,000.
