Diane Patrick -- 9/7/98
Avalon Publishing Group, the publishing division of Publisher's Group Inc., has launched a copublishing alliance with sports and travel book packager Balliett &Fitzgerald.
Neil Ortenberg, Avalon vice-president and publisher of the Thunder's Mouth Press, Marlowe &Co. and Blue Moon Books imprints, told PW the venture will include a new imprint, Adrenaline Books, which will offer titles focusing on outdoor adventure and tales of wilderness survival. The Adrenaline Books titles will be edited by Clint Willis. Adrenaline Books will issue six titles in 1999, beginning with a reissue of Epic: Stories of Survival from the World's Highest Peaks, featuring an essay by bestselling outdoors author Jon Krakauer, which is currently approaching sales of 40,000 in its B&F edition. Other titles coming from the imprint include High: Stories of Survival from Everest and K-2; Rough Water: Stories of Survival from the World's Oceans; and The War: Stories of Life and Death from World War Two.

Other B&F titles on sports and sports reference will be published jointly under the B&F/Thunder's Mouth Press and Marlowe &Co. colophons. Non-adventure titles will be published in conjunction with Thunder's Mouth Press or with Marlowe &Co.

Non-Adrenaline B&F titles for 1999 include an anthology called Bad As They Wanted to Be, featuring profiles on athletes such as Ty Cobb, Jim Bouton and Billie Jean King. Avalon will also publish an expanded edition of journalist Peter Hellman's story of religion and survival, Avenue of the Righteous (1980); it will be released under the Marlowe imprint as When Courage Was Stronger Than Fear: Inspiring Stories of Christians and the Jews They Saved from the Holocaust.
