Bill Thomas, previously senior editor at Doubleday, has been named v-p and editor-in-chief of Doubleday adult trade, effective immediately. He succeeds Patricia Mulcahy, who is leaving the post after three years to pursue other interests. However, she will continue to edit novelist James Lee Burke on a freelance basis.
Thomas will report to Stephen Rubin, president and publisher of Doubleday. He will be responsible for the daily operations of Doubleday's General Books division and will continue to acquire and edit fiction and nonfiction. He will also work closely with Doubleday's paperback imprints and with the Nan A. Talese, Religion and Currency imprints.
Before joining Doubleday, in 1993, Thomas worked for six years at St. Martin's Press. He acquired the bestselling Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. In addition to Albom, among the authors he has acquired are Shelby Steele, Jonathan Lethem and Aimee Bender.
