William Morrow and Utne Reader magazine have formed a partnership to publish a series of books to be known as the Utne Reader line, with the first titles to appear next spring.
The the line's two initial books, set for February 2000, will be Salons: The Joy of Conversation, which will cover the new Internet culture, which Utne has been credited with introducing through a cover story eight years ago. The second, Visionaries Who Could Change Your Life, will study a group of socially engaged thinkers and teachers who are setting the pattern for a new approach to life. A further three titles, including anthologies from the magazine, will appear later in the year.
Jay Walljasper, an Utne veteran, will be editor of the new line. Eric Utne, the magazine's founder and editor-in-chief, told PW, "Morrow is the perfect partner with its dynamic new leadership," including Michael Murphy and Marly Rusoff. Murphy said he has been a subscriber and fan of the magazine for 10 years. "I look forward to having some of their ideas shape future Morrow lists," he said.
