Barricade Books publisher Lyle Stuart, still planning to appeal the verdict in a libel lawsuit he lost in Nevada, learned recently that a similar suit filed against him in Kentucky has been dropped by the plaintiff.
Steve Wynn, who won his 1997 suit against Stuart in Nevada -- in which he claimed that the catalogue copy for Running Scared: The Dangerous Life and Treacherous Times of Las Vegas Casino King Steve Wynn by John L. Smith (News, Jan. 4) libeled him -- decided to drop the Kentucky case. Wynn declared that his "reputation was completely vindicated in the first action."
JoNell Thomas, Stuart's lawyer, pointed out that the suit in Kentucky involved the entire book, not just the catalogue, which would have made the suit far more complicated than the appeal pending in Nevada.
Stuart, who was ordered to pay Wynn $3 million in damages as a result of the Nevada decision, was out of the country and unavailable for comment. At press time, Wynn's lawyer had not returned PW's phone call.
