Blue Mountain Arts Publishing Co. has acquired Paper Expeditions, a Utah-based card company that will add two new card lines, Elephantz and LadyBugs, to Blue Mountain, as well as three new stationery lines. Blue Mountain will re-launch the card lines on January 1.
The Paper purchase could be the first of many acquisitions made by the Boulder-based Blue Mountain. The company expects to close on its $780-million deal to sell its bluemountainsart.com Web site to Excite @Home in December. Jared Schutz, managing director of Blue Mountain and son of the company's founders, told PW that after the deal closes, the company "expects to be more active in both the book-publishing and gift areas." Blue Mountain Press currently publishes a small number of p try and gift books annually. Its most popular title has been To My Daughter with Love by Susan Polis Schutz, who founded Blue Mountain in 1971 with her husband. Other authors include Leonard Nimoy and Natasha Josefowitz.
According to Jared Schutz, Blue Mountain "will be on the outlook for small publishers that are a good fit with us," but added that the book division "will be moving into new areas."
