May Debut for Education Confab Herbert R. Lottman -- 12/13/99 Reed Midem, organizer of Milia and other international trade shows, is about to take on another niche--"the international business of education," as the organizers call it--with the first World Education Market scheduled for next May 24-27 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The intention is to gather producers of educational materials and those who buy it from the four corners of the world. Elaine Legault, who is organizing the new fair out of Reed Midem's world headquarters, promises that WEM will be "business to business," designed to attract "people who can sign a check." It's to be the first time that the whole world of education will be gathered under one roof, at a time when educational techniques (if not curricula) are becoming increasingly international. An early list of exhibitors indicates the range: Discovery Communications, McGraw-Hill and Microsoft from the U.S.; Addison Wesley Longman and Nelson/Thomson Learning from Canada; Dorling Kindersley and the Open University from the U.K.; the U.N. and the World Bank; as well as major publishers and educational institutions from continental Europe, Israel and the Far East. (Expect to find some 250 in all.) Legault is also setting up a conference program that will extend through the four-day run of the show, with the usual Reed Midem emphasis on hard-nosed business: forming international partnerships, cross-sectorial deals, cutting-edge trends in programs and technologies. There'll be a drop-in visitors' fee of $523. For more information, contact Patrick Lynch at Reed Midem's New York base, at (212) 370-7470. |
