New S&S King Deal
John F. Baker -- 1/17/00

Stephen King has extended his copublishing agreement with Simon & Schuster, in which author and publisher share both the financial risks and rewards, for three more books. As in the previous deal, three works of fiction will be published by Scribner in hardcover, Pocket Books in paperback and by Simon & Schuster Audio.

The deal, arranged between S&S president Jack Romanos and King's lawyer, Arthur Greene, calls for the first new book to be a novel, From a Buick Eight. No pub date was announced.

Romanos commented on the new agreement, for which no figures were given: "This is a testimony to the strength and success of our partnership. We're delighted that the relationship between King and Simon & Schuster has grown and expanded." King said, "I'm delighted to know my future with Simon & Schuster is secure."

The news will be a relief to fans of the mega-selling horror author, who was badly injured when he was hit by a van on a Maine roadside last year; reports at the time suggested he was finding it difficult to resume his writing.

King has published eight titles with the S&S group since the last profit-sharing deal. He is currently represented on bestseller lists by Hearts of Atlantis, a Pocket Books movie tie-in mass market of The Green Mile and an audio-only original called Blood and Smoke.
