Chicago Indie Partners with Hazelden Sam Weller -- 6/5/00
The Hazelden Foundation, publisher of materials about addiction, prevention and recovery from chemical dependency and related challenges, has announced a new publishing partnership with Chicago indie bookstore Transitions Bookplace. The new Hazelden/Transitions imprint will produce new books and will reissue out-of-print titles. There are four titles scheduled for release this fall.
"It's exciting," said Clay Garner, executive vice-president of Hazelden Information and Educational Services, "because of the possibilities that open up when two like-minded organizations, both with missions to help people, decide to work together."
"As a bookseller," said Gayle Mandel, Transitions co-owner (along with her husband, Howard), "we have our fingers on the pulse of what's going on. This partnership gives us an opportunity to publish what we believe in and what the community is asking for. And with Hazelden's expertise, we have an opportunity to learn a lot, too."
Mandel added that the Hazelden/Transitions partnership will also extend to the Internet. Plans are in the works, she told PW, for all in-store readings and author events at Transitions to be broadcast on the Hazelden Web site (www.hazelden.org). The 6,000-sq.-ft., 33,000-title Transitions bookstore is one of the largest sellers of personal growth and spiritual titles in the U.S. The bookstore, along with its in-house cafe, features a lecture series that hosted more than 200 authors in 1999.
The new titles by the joint imprint are Why Normal Isn't Healthy by Bowen White, M.D., and Health Intuition by Karen Grace Kassy.
Hazelden/Transitions will also republish two OP titles, Thin Within: How to Eat and Live Like a Thin Person, by Judy Wardell Halliday, and Twin Souls: Finding Your True Spiritual Partner, by Patricia Joudry and Maurie D. Pressman, M.D. Back To Bookselling ---> |
