The National Book Foundation announced a new effort to celebrate and provide a little marketing support for books written by the winners of its Distinguished Contribution to American Letters award, a prize that honors the lifetime achievement of a living author. The prize is awarded annually at the National Book Awards ceremony.
The NBF has designed an embossed gold medallion that can be affixed to the books of the 12 writers who have received the DCAL award since 1988. Publishers can purchase the actual medallions (at $175 per 1,000) to place on the books or purchase the image ($1,500 per title) to be printed on the cover.
The 12 distinguished writers are Jason Epstein, Daniel Boorstin, Saul Bellow, Eudora Welty, James Laughlin, Clifton Fadiman, Gwendolyn Brooks, David McCullough, Toni Morrison, Studs Terkel, John Updike and Ray Bradbury.
