Searchers after Lovecraftian horror need look no further than Acolytes of Cthulhu, edited by Robert M. Price. This reprint anthology features 28 tales by mostly minor disciples, though there are a couple of big names (Borges, Neil Gaiman), plus a rare youthful offering from leading HPL scholar S.T. Joshi. The prolific Price provides his usual entertaining and erudite introduction, while the Gahan Wilson jacket is a delight. (Fedogan & Bremer [fedbrem@visi.com], $32 390p ISBN 1-878252-47-X)
The SFWA Grand Masters: Volume Three, edited by Frederik Pohl, includes classic tales by Lester Del Rey, editor Pohl, Damon Knight, A.E. Van Vogt and Jack Vance. For the moment at least, as Pohl indicates in his intro, this will be the last in this appealing anthology series. (Tor, $25.95 448p ISBN 0-312-86877-4) And for Harry Harrison fans there's 50 in 50: A Collection of Short Stories One for Each of Fifty Years. The subtitle says it all. (Tor, $29.95 592p ISBN -87789-7)
Two other titles honor SF greats: From These Ashes: The Complete Short SF of Fredric Brown, edited by Ben Yalow (NESFA, $29 693p ISBN 1-886778-18-3), and Immodest Proposals: The Complete Science Fiction of William Tenn: Volume I, edited by James A. Mann and Mary C. Tabasko (NESFA, $29 619p ISBN -19-1). Barry Malzberg introduces the first volume, Connie Willis the second.
