The third fiction newcomer on this week's list, Putnam's Dead Sleep, shares with Hornby's novel not only a pub date but number of copies in print: 85,000. Author Greg Iles's sixth novel is his first hardcover to hit PW's charts; the Signet mass market editions of Mortal Fear and The Quiet Game had runs of 13 and 12 weeks, respectively, in 1998 and 2000. PW's starred review of the author's latest noted that he "continues to amaze with his incredible range, crafting a complex serial killer novel with the intimacy of a smalltown cozy and the punch of a techno-thriller." Signings at local Mississippi bookstores have attracted hundreds of fans, said the publisher, with the author being featured in newspapers and on numerous area TV and radio shows. Fans will soon be seeing Iles's work at local multiplexes, as his 24 Hours, published last year, is being made into a movie starring Kevin Bacon, Charlize Theron and Courtney Love.
