Stuart Woods makes this week's list with his 23rd novel, Orchid Blues. It's the second in a new series featuring small-town sleuth Holly Barker and her companion, a Doberman pinscher called Daisy (the author of this column is especially fond of that name). Putnam has 175,000 copies after two trips to press. The first book in the series, Orchid Beach, enjoyed a one-time landing on both PW's hardcover and mass market paperback lists. Landing is something the author knows quite a bit about. He is at the end of a 15-city tour and he flies his own private plane to each city. He did run into one snag, when he lost touch with the control tower during one flight and had to be escorted into Teterboro, N.J., by two F-16 fighter jets. The crowds, reported Putnam, have been very good more than 1,000 attended a book and author luncheon in Detroit, where he was one of the speakers.
