In the Winners' Circle

SCBWI recently announced its 2001 Golden Kite Awards. The fiction winner was True Believer by Virginia Euwer Wolff (S&S/Atheneum); The Life History of a Star by Kelly Easton (S&S/McElderry) was awarded an honor. In nonfiction, the winner was Black Potatoes: The Story of the Great Irish Famine by Susan Campbell Bartoletti (Houghton); John & Abigail Adams: An American Love Story by Judith St. George (Holiday House) got the honor.

The picture-book text award went to The Shoe Tree of Chagrin by J. Patrick Lewis, illus. by Chris Sheban (Creative Company), and the honor went to Bluebird Summer by Deborah Hopkinson, illus. by Bethanne Andersen (Greenwillow). For picture-book illustration, The Lamp, the Ice, and the Boat Called Fish by Jacqueline Briggs Martin, illus. by Beth Krommes (Houghton), won the prize; Castles, Caves and Honeycombs by Linda Ashman, illus. by Lauren Stringer (Harcourt) won the honor. The awards will be presented at SCBWI's annual conference in Los Angeles in August.

The shortlists for the prestigious Carnegie and GreenawayMedals in the U.K. have been released. Nominees for the Carnegie are Sharon Creech for Love That Dog (Bloomsbury in the U.K.; HarperCollins/Cotler in the U.S.); Peter Dickinson for The Ropemaker (Macmillan U.K.; Delacorte U.S.); Eva Ibbotson for Journey to the River Sea (Macmillan U.K.; Dutton U.S.); Elizabeth Laird for Jake's Tower (Macmillan U.K.; Barron's U.S.); Geraldine McCaughrean for The Kite Rider (OUP U.K.; HarperCollins U.S.); Geraldine McCaughrean for Stop the Train (OUP in the U.K.); Terry Pratchett for Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents (Doubleday U.K.; HarperCollins U.S.); and Virginia Euwer Wolff for True Believer (Faber U.K.; Atheneum U.S.).

The following have been nominated for the Greenaway Medal: Jez Alborough for Fix-it Duck (HarperCollins U.K. and U.S.); Russell Ayto for The Witch's Children (Orchard U.K.); Nicola Bayley for Katje the Windmill Cat (Walker U.K.; Candlewick U.S.); Caroline Binch for Silver Shoes (Dorling Kindersley U.K. and U.S.); Helen Cooper for Tatty Ratty (Doubleday U.K.; FSG U.S.); Charles Fuge for Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball (Gullane U.K.; Sterling U.S.); Bob Graham for Let's Get a Pup! (Walker U.K.; Candlewick U.S.); and Chris Riddell for Pirate Diary (Walker U.K.; Candlewick U.S.).

The winners of the two awards will be announced in London on July 12.
