Encounter Books, the publisher that watched its book about Wen Ho Lee whistleblower Notra Trulock get bogged down in government reviews (News, May 27), is finally going ahead with publication. Publisher Peter Collier said he and the author have placated the FBI and CIA, but have given up on pleasing the Department of Energy, and will simply publish the book, Code Name Kindred Spirit, in January. Revisions are being made and the company will scrap the 500 galleys that had been in limbo since they were yanked at the last moment at BEA.
Collier described the entire episode (the book was scheduled to go to reviewers six months ago) as a "le Carré story written by Kafka" and compared the process to being "nibbled to death by ducks," but said he doesn't think a rewrite will undermine anything. "They [the FBI and CIA] had some semi-legitimate concerns. We've had to recompose some parts of it, but I don't think the main points have been compromised." Code Name will have an initial print run of about 15,000.
