Most Segments Down in April

(Measured in $ sales against same time periods, 2002) Figures released by the AAP show April sales fell in eight of the 13 categories tracked by the association. Adult hardcover sales were off 33.7%, while trade paperback sales declined 7.2%. Sales were not much better in the children's segments, where hardcover sales were down 16.4% and paperback sales fell 13.1%. For the year to date, sales were down 28.7% in adult hardcover and 9.9% in trade paperback, while children's hardcover sales were down 23.1% and paperback sales declined 4.6%. Bright spots in April were mass market paperback, with sales ahead 22.8%, and e-books, where (small) sales jumped 268%. In education, the elhi segment continued to post solid gains, with April sales up 11.7% and sales in the first four months of the year increasing 12.7%. In the college segment, as is typical in April, returns exceeded gross sales in the month. | ||
