Ruby Holler by American author Sharon Creech (Bloomsbury) won the 2002 Carnegie Medal, given to an "outstanding book for children." Up on Cloud Nine by Anne Fine (Doubleday) was highly commended.
Jethro Byrde—Fairy Child by Australian artist Bob Graham (Walker Books) is the winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal, given for "outstanding illustration in a children's book. That Pesky Rat by Lauren Child (Orchard) was commended.
Both awards, the most prestigious children's book awards in the U.K., were announced July 11. Authors and illustrators from all English-speaking countries are eligible.
Creech's The Wanderer was shortlisted for the Carnegie in 2000, and her Love That Dog was shortlisted in 2002. She is the first American to win the Carnegie and has now won top awards in both the U.S. and U.K., having won the 1995 Newbery Medal for Walk Two Moons.
Graham has also been shortlisted for the Greenaway twice: in 1988 for Queenie the Bantam, and in 2001 for Let's Get a Pup.
