July was a mixed month for the Publishers Weekly Stock Index, with the stock prices of 13 companies increasing while falling at nine. The PWSI was up just under 1% for July compared to a 2.7% increase for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Steady monthly sales gains at Educational Development Corp. has resulted in a steady increase in its stock price this year, and July was no exception as the publisher's stock price shot up 27%. Amazon.com's strong second-quarter results and optimistic outlook for the remainder of the year drove its stock price up 14.6%. Franklin Electronic Publishers, which enjoyed a 20% run up in its stock price in June, lost all of that gain in July as its share price fell 22.2%. An upbeat forecast by Advanced Marketing Services appears to have been overshadowed by news of a federal subpoena, and AMS's stock price dropped 12.3% in July. Source: Reed Business Information | |||
