Bill Barry joins DK Inc. today as president of its U.S. operations, a position that has been vacant since Danny Gurr stepped down as president and publisher three years ago. Barry will be based in DK's New York office and report to Andrew Welham, managing director, who has been overseeing the company from London.
DK's senior v-p of publishing, Chuck Lang, will report to Barry. Therese Burke, DK's senior v-p of sales and marketing, will continue to report to Dick Heffernan, president of Penguin Group USA sales for adult hardcover and children's books. Dorothy Regan, DK's CFO, will continue to report to Anthony Laurino, CFO of Penguin USA. A DK spokesperson said Barry's appointment reflects the importance of the U.S. market, which is now DK's largest.
Barry had been on a two-year sabbatical following the sale of Hungry Minds—where he was president and COO—to John Wiley in September 2001. Before joining Hungry Minds, Barry held executive spots in operations and corporate development at Random House.
